After constructing an EMIUK-designed ministry base on their ‘Field of Dreams’ site, Show Mercy International plans a Christian Primary School on a nearby 14-acre plot to serve orphans and underprivileged children from the surrounding villages.
Show Mercy International (SMI) opened their Field of Dreams site in 2009. What began as a vision to provide a ministry centre that focused on orphan care in rural, central Uganda soon evolved into a bigger picture effort to have a lifelong impact on the children’s lives. With a ministry centre and medical clinic up and running on the site to give them a presence in the local community, they came to realise that the education system is the primary place where the children’s lives are shaped and moulded. Consequently, the idea of merely housing and caring for orphans on the site was set aside in favour of building and operating a boarding school. To do this, additional nearby land was purchased.
SMI contacted EMIUK and requested that they return to help them plan and design the new school. With discipleship and excellence in education their top priorities, quality was emphasized over quantity. Funding model, boarding capacity, training programs and the steep site topography were all a part of the challenge for the EMI team to consider. Led by EMIUK Director Mike Woods and staff member Brad Crawford, a team of 15 volunteer engineers, architects and surveyors visited the Field of Dreams site in early February, 2014. Designing a master plan with all the necessary utility systems incorporated to allow the school to operate with excellence was the charge given to the team by SMI. With a steep, 14-acre site as a blank canvas, the team of designers set out to first survey, then master plan, and finally design all aspects of the future school, including landscaping and drainage, water and sewage, electrical and IT, and even sustainable agriculture.
For this project, Show Mercy International's goal is to design and build the new primary school adjacent to and part of their existing work with children at the 'Field of Dreams' orphanage. The school will provide teaching for children from the orphanage as well as for children from the surrounding areas. SMI have stated that they want the school to be focused on developing 'leaders that know their identity in Christ and who are able to 'dream big dreams', knowing that God has incredible purpose for their lives'. They want the school to provide the children with, not only a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, but also an excellent education that will help develop in them skills for both problem solving and leadership.
